Loch Loskin

This first shared drum score of 2022 was written to be the strathspey of an MSR for a band of experienced players who wanted a drum score with a challenging edge to it. So here we go. The score is meant to fit the better experienced to advanced drummers. The chips/unison written in there, help to further express the dynamics in the drum score, which should be reflected in the attached recording. The most challenging stuff in there is probably Continue reading

The Pipers Bonnet

This weeks shared drum score was written back in 2003 for an off season concert band. We were a bunch of players without a fixed local band, yet some of us would play with over seas bands during the summer. In the winter time we would gather up and play concerts in Denmark.

This drum score was written for the strathspey The Pipers Bonnet. I remember thinking that this tune was somewhat tricky to write a drum score for, however I managed to come up with something. Playing it today felt a little awkward since my playing has emerged and developed into a different place now than where it was back then. Sorry for the Continue reading

Aspen Bank

This weeks shared drum score was written for the strathspey Aspen Bank. It’s another tune that I remember playing earlier on in my pipe band drumming journey with Holbæk Pipe Band. I believe that the tune is relatively easy for the pipers, however it can be tricky for drummers with the number of tachums in there that we should try to express as well. In this drum score I was aiming for the experienced level, however some might suggest that this should be for the advanced level, and therefore I will tick both categories for this drum score. Especially the Continue reading

The Duke Of Gordon’s Birthday

This weeks shared score was written back in 2001 for a Danish grade 4 band. It was meant to be played in a medley. The level of the drum score is for the experienced drummer. There some drag movements in there that can be tricky to master, for example in the endings with the accented rolls. The key part in this drum score is the Continue reading

MacBeths Strathspey

The weeks shared drum score was written for the tune MacBeths Strathspey. What a nice and catchy tune. It was written in the context of being a strathspey in our in medley in Balagan. I’ve always been in favour of those long beefy tunes in a medley in general, rather than a bunch of two parted tunes all throughout. The drum score was written mainly by Louise Overgård Lindhardtsen (leading drummer in Balagan at the time), and with inputs from myself, Alex Vettas and Helge Johansson. A few of the highlights of the drum score that I really enjoyed playing with the drum corp are; the ending of the Continue reading

Loudens Bonnie Woods & Braes

This drum score was written this past week for a pipe band in Holland. The PM of the band wrote me a note saying thanks for the drum scores on the site, and said that they had made use of some of the shared drum scores. At the same time he asked wether I had drum scores for a few tunes that they had been working on. I emailed him back that, as a thanks for the kind words, I would write them a drum score for one of the tunes. So, here we go.

The drum score is written for the beginner level however it does have some more challenging bits in there. For example the ending of the 1st lines of the parts could be played Continue reading

Struan Robertson

This weeks drum score was written for an experienced drum corp to be played in an MSR. The drum score was written very recently and with the arranging of B&T’s in mind. Notice, when you play along, that it’s written like the piping music – with one line to be repeated in the 1st and in the 3rd part to two lines non-repeated in the 2nd and in the 4th part. To me the highlight of the tune and the drum score is the first bar of the 4th part, because Continue reading

Clachnaharry

This shared drum score of the week was written back in 2006 for a Scottish grade 3 band for their medley selection. The score was written for the experienced level drummers. The endings might seem a little simple, however this simple movement suits the melody very well – I think. One of the tricky’er movements in the drum score is the Continue reading

PM Sandy Gordon

Score of the week this time around is for a 2-parted strathspey for the experienced drummer. When it was written more than 15 years ago it was to fit into a medley selection following last weeks shared drum score. We played the same selection a year later, and this score was slightly modified with a variation in bar 2 of both parts. This was done to make the Continue reading

Rodney Hull QC

This score of the week was written back in 2000 for a medley selection for Holbæk Pipe Band, whom I was the leading drummer for at the time. The level of the score is for the experienced drummer. This strathspey followed the intro tune to the medley and therefore, establishing a good ensemble vibe right from the start, was important. Especially the first part was written to fit the the tune very closely to help establish a nice strathspey idiom and ensemble. In the second part Continue reading

Monymusk

Due to my absence last week, there will be two scores of this week. This first drum score of the week was written back around 15 year ago for a Scandinavian combined group of different bands. The bands were too small a group to compete on their own, so they gathered up and competed together as The Scandinavian Mayflies. This score was written to be their strathspey in their MSR, and also to be an easy drum score to memorize. As you can see in the drum score there’s quite Continue reading
