Mairis Wedding

This weeks drum score was written for the traditional tune Mairis Wedding. It was written for a beginner drummer to be played with his grade 4B parade band. The aim of this drum score was to make it simple, yet fitting for the tune. It’s pretty straight forward and it should be drum-able for any beginner drummer knowing the basics of Continue reading

This weeks shared drum score was made for the Cross Borders MSR to be played in 2020. However that never really happened, due to the world turning upside down. I wrote this one with lots of inspiration from Jacob Jørgensens drum score. I would say that this is probably 70% or so his score and then I removed some stuff and re-composed some stuff to make it fit the level of my own comfort and the level of the drum corp. With the permission from Jake himself I’m sharing this drum score. If you wish to view or learn the original drum score from Jake, then get in touch with him directly. One of the things I really like in Jakes original drum score is the composition of the Continue reading

The Battle Of Waterloo

The last shared drum score of this month was written in late december of 2019 for the 2020 medley of Cross Borders Pipe Band, for the tune The Battle Of Waterloo. We will be playing this as an opener in our medley. The inspiration to make this the opener came from the PM Björn who had listened to Scottish Powers medley, where they used this tune as intro to their medley.

In the drum score I use the same intro, with the long 1-beat roll into the first beat of the tune. The drum score was meant to be very straight forward since we’ll be walking as well as being very much on the beat. There’s some technical spots in the Continue reading

79th Farewell To Gibraltar

This drum score was written for a grade 4 band for the tune 79th Farewell to Gibraltar. It was meant to be the first tune in their MAP MSR. The tune was chosen because it seemed easier overall than some other tunes the band had tried on.

The level of the drum score is somewhat around the experienced level. It was meant to fit drummers coming off the standard scores and beginning to be presented Continue reading

Bathgate Highland Gathering

This weeks shared drum score was written for the tune Bathgate Highland Gathering.

The drum score was created for the Cross Borders Pipe Band – who will be competing at the Worlds in August 2019 in grade 3B. It’s made as the intro of a medley. Since writing the drum score, we’ve decided to NOT repeat the 1st part to give more time for other stuff later in the medley. In some spots of the tune we arranged the tune slightly different (holding some notes longer) to give more space for Continue reading

Jimmy Young

This weeks shared drum score was originally written for Balagan to play in an MSR. It was written by myself and the LD of the band Louise Overgård Lindhardtsen. Since then I have made a few minor changes to the original drum score to make it fit the new drum corp that I will be leading soon. Sometimes it a great opportunity to revisit and re-arrange a drum score after having played it for a whole season, been listening to recordings and gotten feed-back from fellow drummers and judges. One of the things I like the most about this arrangement is the Continue reading

Mrs Lily Christie

This drum score was written as the second 6/8 march in a 6/8 march set two 6/8 marches. The first part sets the proper 6/8 rhythm, where the next few part kind of spices it up a little bit. Especially the paradiddle/singles run in the 3rd part will be fun to play in a drum corp. In the tune; the 3rd&4th bar of the last part –  it’s really tempting to Continue reading

High Road To Gairloch

This drum score was written for a Danish drum corp earlier in the year for the 2/4 march High Road To Gairloch. It was meant to fill out a spot in a competition march set for beginner drummers. The level was made to beginner to allow every drummer in the corp to play along. To me the key of the tune is the ending of each part – therefore I wrote the drum score to follow this part of the tune very closely. The most challenging part of the drum score is probably Continue reading

Lochanside

This drum score for Lochanside was written a few weeks back for a Danish grade 4 band. It builds on the more complicated drum score that I wrote for this tune a while back (also to be found on this site). This drum score is simplified to rolls, triplets and flams.

It seems to me that this is first non standard drum score that this specific band or drum corp has played. That’s why the level was adjusted to fit that aspect. Especially given the fact of the level being rather simple, it’s even more important to express the dynamics very clearly throughout. For example in the Continue reading

3/4 Adaptables

This drum score was put together for a Danish grade 4 band for them to play along with different 3/4 march tunes. The level of the drum corp is very diverse – some experienced drummers, some beginner drummers and some scout/marching band drummers not used to playing triplet rolls.

Therefore, this set of adaptables contains a lot of triplet rolls and regular triplets, to allow the drummers not familiar with this Continue reading

Oh Susanna

This drum score was written for an old traditional american folk song called Old Susanna. It was written to make it possible for beginner piper and drummers to play together at an early stage. Usually the tune would be played twice through with no repeats of each part.

The drum score follows the tune very closely (I hope you’ll be able to hear that and hum along) and is fairly easy, yet leaving a bit of space for some challenging parts, such as Continue reading

Sweet Maid of Glendaruel

This drum score is another one for the tune Sweet Maid of Glendaruel and was written a few years back for a grade 4B to compete at the World Pipe Band Championships. This one is written directly to fit the tune all the way through, but it’s also a bit more daring in the sense of being a little jazzy on the endings. In the first line of the drum score, it’s very much following the beat of the tune – suitable for marching in. Again – like in the other shared drum score for this tune – there’s loads of space to Continue reading

Sweet Maid of Glendaruel

This drum score of the week was written for a Danish grade 4 band to be a drum score for everyone to be able to play. It’s based around a standard 2/4 drum setting with 3rd&4th bar and the ending being repeated throughout. Therefore it was evident that the remaining bars would follow the tune very closely to create good ensemble. The important issue when playing this drum score is to be able to express the Continue reading

Vimy Ridge Academy

This drum score was written last week in preparation for teaching at a summer school. The tune is written by Michael Grey and is a strong march written in 7/4. The idea of the drum score was to underline the tune with a strong beat1 of each bar and at the same time have enough variations to make it exciting for the players and for the listeners to play and listen to. The dynamics in the drum score is mainly made from Continue reading

The Wellington Police Pipers

This drum score was written back in 2001 for a Danish grade 4 band with a strong drum corp. The piping tune, The Wellington Police Pipers In Australia, is very nice and uplifting, so the idea with the drum score was to bring out the same feeling. The volume should be gentle throughout when playing the drum score – this will also allow some dynamic range to bring out the accents. Notice that there’s no Continue reading

Lochanside

This drum score was written for a grade 4 drum corp and for a very nice tune – Lochanside. The idea was to make the drum score very ensemble secure. For example the first two bars are very much on the beat and in sync with the piping tune. My favourite part of the tune is the transition from line 1 to 2 in the last part, so of course I had to highlight that somehow in the drum score. I decided to make Continue reading

Mrs Lily Christie

The drum score of this week was written for a grade 4 drummer who was looking for something specific to play to a 6/8 march, that wasn’t “just” the standard 6/8 drum score. Yet, it was important that it’s not too difficult to play as this was one of his early experiences with the 6/8 march idiom. There’s a few movements in there which can be tricky for beginners, such as Continue reading
