Jock Wilson’s Ball

This drum score was written for the uplifting, positive and melodic reel Jock Wilson’s Ball. It’s my 2nd drum score for this tune – this time written for the experienced drummer to be play by a local band for their “easy” MSR in grade 4 competitions.

The most challenging part of the score is the accented rolls – especially in bar Continue reading

Alick C MacGregor

This weeks shared drum score was written for the very melodic reel Alick C MacGregor. I’ve heard it played many times by solo players over the year, and always found it very pleasing to listen to, so it was a nice challenge to write something for this great tune. It’s written for the experienced/advanced level and presents a few challenges such as Continue reading

Jock Wilson’s Ball

The shared drum score of this week was written for the reel Jock Wilson’s Ball back in June 2020 during my drum score writing challenge of writing one drum score pr. day. I’ve always enjoyed listening to this tune, and therefore decided I would go for making a drum score for it.

The level is aimed to be for the experienced level, however there’s is probably a few patterns in there that some would regard as being advanced – for example the Continue reading

High Road To Linton

The shared drum score of this week was also written for High Road To Linton – however for a 5 parted version (I believe the last two was the same part repeated). It was written back in 2008 for the Balagan concert band to be played by advanced drummers in the end of our medley that year. We played it the first time at a workshop I believe. Lots of flams, swiss-ruffs and ratamacues is in this one. It’s a fun tune to Continue reading

Strathann Reel

This weeks drum score was made for the reel, written by Andrew Bonar, Strathann Reel. The drum score was meant to suit the level of experienced grade 4 drummers. It was going to be the first reel of two in a medley selection. I first heard this tune played by SFU Pipe Band back in the nineties. It’s easy to add some effective Continue reading

An Drochaid Chliuteach

This weeks drum score was made for the tune An Drochaid Chliuteach back in 2002. It was written for a mini band concert, made by a group of mainly Danish players who would later form the concert band Balagan (and later on a competing band). This tune is one I’ve always enjoyed listening to, because of it’s interesting different time signature 3/2 reel. It’s a short, but very catchy tune, that brings excitement to any selection, in my opinion. First time I heard it was with SFU Pipe Band many years ago. The score was written for the advanced level, but can probably be played by some skilled experienced drummers. The highlight of the drum score Continue reading

High Road To Linton

This weeks drum score is an extension of the previously shared 2 parted drum score for High Road To Linton. I’ve modified the 2nd part a little bit to give a wee twist before entering the 3rd part. This drum score was actually written for perhaps the smallest band in the entire world, a band located in Scandinavia of retired players who only Continue reading

The Brolum

This weeks drum score is for the traditional Irish tune “The Brolum”. I first heard the tune played by Simon Fraser University years ago, and have ever since really liked the uplifting spirit of that tune. This year, when we were picking tunes for a medley for the Cross Borders Pipe Band, I came to think of this tune for a reel, and wrote a drum score for it.

The idea with the drum score was to secure the drive of the tune and to make room for big dynamics. We, as drummers, can turn the volume of the pipe band up & down. I like to take advantage of that, rather than trying to be Continue reading

The Busindre Reel

This drum score was written for the ending of a medley for a grade 4B band. The tune itself is quite lively and also a huge challenge for any piper regardless of level. I aimed to make the drum score follow the same lively pattern however at a lower level, so that the drummers would be able to execute the drum score – especially coming to the end of a medley. Underneath follows the instructions I sent along with the drum score.

The LD starts off the drum score, and then Continue reading

The Brown Haired Maid

This drum score was written for myself to compete at the Copenhagen Winter Competition back in March this year. A piper friend of mine really like this tune and encouraged me to write a drum score for it, and also encouraged me to go and compete. I had a lot of fun writing this drum score, and also playing it in competition. The long roll beginning the 6th part was suggested to me by a piper friend of mine, because Continue reading

The Keel Row

This drum score for the reel version of The Keel Row was written back in 2008 for a grade 4 band to be the ending of their medley – see the fancy ending of the drum score. The level of the drum score was meant to be challenging for the medley drummers of the grade 4 band without being unachievable. The level of the drum score could be made more difficult by Continue reading

The Sash In Hvidovre

This last drum score of the week of 2015, was written for a tune written by Bernard Bouhadana – currently PM of Balagan. The arrangement of the tune was played by the Balagan concert band at some of the early concerts of the band in 2008 – as being the first of the reels in the ending of the medley selection. The name of the tune refers to the time in 2004 where Continue reading

Roodies Reel

This weeks score of the week was written in 2007 for the Balagan concert band. It was the second reel in our medley selection. Although a reel, we repeated both parts. This score turned out to be one of the more challenging in that particular selection – especially the single run in the 2nd part. This was changed with the drum corp as we where playing it, because Continue reading

Sleepy Maggie

The last score of the week for this month is for another traditional reel Sleepy Maggie. It was made to fit into a MSR Map A set following last weeks shared drum score for The Fairy Dance. When writing this drum score, I thought of keeping it simple and with a lot of down beat to help the overall ensemble presentation. The score should be able for all drum corps to play – I think. The most difficult movement in there Continue reading
