Hugh Kennedy

This weeks shared drum score was made for the Cross Borders MSR to be played in 2020. However that never really happened, due to the world turning upside down. I wrote this one with lots of inspiration from Jacob Jørgensens drum score. I would say that this is probably 70% or so his score and then I removed some stuff and re-composed some stuff to make it fit the level of my own comfort and the level of the drum corp. With the permission from Jake himself I’m sharing this drum score. If you wish to view or learn the original drum score from Jake, then get in touch with him directly. One of the things I really like in Jakes original drum score is the composition of the Continue reading

MacBeths Strathspey

The weeks shared drum score was written for the tune MacBeths Strathspey. What a nice and catchy tune. It was written in the context of being a strathspey in our in medley in Balagan. I’ve always been in favour of those long beefy tunes in a medley in general, rather than a bunch of two parted tunes all throughout. The drum score was written mainly by Louise Overgård Lindhardtsen (leading drummer in Balagan at the time), and with inputs from myself, Alex Vettas and Helge Johansson. A few of the highlights of the drum score that I really enjoyed playing with the drum corp are; the ending of the Continue reading

High Road To Linton

This weeks drum score is an extension of the previously shared 2 parted drum score for High Road To Linton. I’ve modified the 2nd part a little bit to give a wee twist before entering the 3rd part. This drum score was actually written for perhaps the smallest band in the entire world, a band located in Scandinavia of retired players who only Continue reading

79th Farewell To Gibraltar

This drum score was written for a grade 4 band for the tune 79th Farewell to Gibraltar. It was meant to be the first tune in their MAP MSR. The tune was chosen because it seemed easier overall than some other tunes the band had tried on.

The level of the drum score is somewhat around the experienced level. It was meant to fit drummers coming off the standard scores and beginning to be presented Continue reading

The Brolum

This weeks drum score is for the traditional Irish tune “The Brolum”. I first heard the tune played by Simon Fraser University years ago, and have ever since really liked the uplifting spirit of that tune. This year, when we were picking tunes for a medley for the Cross Borders Pipe Band, I came to think of this tune for a reel, and wrote a drum score for it.

The idea with the drum score was to secure the drive of the tune and to make room for big dynamics. We, as drummers, can turn the volume of the pipe band up & down. I like to take advantage of that, rather than trying to be Continue reading

Jimmy Young

This weeks shared drum score was originally written for Balagan to play in an MSR. It was written by myself and the LD of the band Louise Overgård Lindhardtsen. Since then I have made a few minor changes to the original drum score to make it fit the new drum corp that I will be leading soon. Sometimes it a great opportunity to revisit and re-arrange a drum score after having played it for a whole season, been listening to recordings and gotten feed-back from fellow drummers and judges. One of the things I like the most about this arrangement is the Continue reading

Mrs Lily Christie

This drum score was written as the second 6/8 march in a 6/8 march set two 6/8 marches. The first part sets the proper 6/8 rhythm, where the next few part kind of spices it up a little bit. Especially the paradiddle/singles run in the 3rd part will be fun to play in a drum corp. In the tune; the 3rd&4th bar of the last part –  it’s really tempting to Continue reading

The Busindre Reel

This drum score was written for the ending of a medley for a grade 4B band. The tune itself is quite lively and also a huge challenge for any piper regardless of level. I aimed to make the drum score follow the same lively pattern however at a lower level, so that the drummers would be able to execute the drum score – especially coming to the end of a medley. Underneath follows the instructions I sent along with the drum score.

The LD starts off the drum score, and then Continue reading

Paddy Be Easy

This drum score is an updated and extended version of an older drum score I wrote for this tune back in 2014. This time it’s for 4 parts, as well as a reprise of the 1st part. It was meant to fit a small drum corp of adult learners who’s looking for a simple yet interesting score for this slip jig. I added in a break in the 3rd part to create some dynamics in the overall presentation. In the repeat of the part, there’s an option Continue reading

Conrads Hat

This drum score was written for a tune composed by Michael Grey called Conrads Hat. It’s named after the hat of a german piper. The tune has a very distinct ending frase which is also noticed in the drum score.

The level of the drum score is meant to fit intermediate level drummers with some knowledge of playing jigs yet it leaves a fed challenging bits such as Continue reading

Struan Robertson

This weeks drum score was written for an experienced drum corp to be played in an MSR. The drum score was written very recently and with the arranging of B&T’s in mind. Notice, when you play along, that it’s written like the piping music – with one line to be repeated in the 1st and in the 3rd part to two lines non-repeated in the 2nd and in the 4th part. To me the highlight of the tune and the drum score is the first bar of the 4th part, because Continue reading

Lucy Cassidy

This drum score for the tune Lucy Cassidy, was written a few years back for myself to play at a solo competition in Luzern in Switzerland. A piper friend of mine was going to Switzerland visit a common friend of ours and asked if I wanted to come along, and also play a competition there. I accepted and had to come up with an idea for a hornpipe. So, I came up with this. I wanted the first couple of bars to be very much in sync with the tune, therefore it’s very much on the beat in the first part. The endings can be a little risky because of the Continue reading

Three In A Row

This score of the week was written back in 2003 for a 4-parted 6/8 jig written by Bernard Bouhadana, now PM of Balagan. The piping music for this lovely jig and other great compositions can be found in the tune book Northern Lights Book One – which can be purchased here or you can of course contact Bernard directly and ask him for the piping music. I wrote a drum score for this tune, because I really like the tune – it’s so melodic and lyrical as if it tells a story. I find it to be a less ordinary jig with a few nice twists which are nice for a drummer to jam to – for example the Continue reading

Mrs Lily Christie

The drum score of this week was written for a grade 4 drummer who was looking for something specific to play to a 6/8 march, that wasn’t “just” the standard 6/8 drum score. Yet, it was important that it’s not too difficult to play as this was one of his early experiences with the 6/8 march idiom. There’s a few movements in there which can be tricky for beginners, such as Continue reading

Compositionally Challenged

This drum score was written for a tune called Compositionally Challenged composed by Iain Currie. The hornpipe was a part of a hornpipe set with the early Balagan concert band back in 2007/2008. However this tune and drum score was taken out just before the first concerts in February 2008 to give room for other stuff in the concert. The drum score is straight forward to the melody and was written not to take too much attention away from the very melodic tune. A place to really go for the dynamics would be in the Continue reading

Banjo Breakdown

A new year – 2016 – and a new shared drum score of the week is up. This time it’s for a 4-parted jig for the experienced drummer, looking for a challenge. The drum score was written over this last month for a local Danish grade 4 band with an experienced drum corp. I think the tune was challenging to write a drum score for, because of the Continue reading

Glasgow Police Pipers

The last score of the week of November is a beginner drum score for the 4 parted jig Glasgow Police Pipers. The score was written for a drum corp that has never before played jig. This is hopefully reflected in the drum score, in the way that there’s a lot of eight notes (as in the tune) and also the score is written to be without too many technical challenges. Yet, there’s some challenges in Continue reading
